Matthew Lax (b. Baltimore, Maryland) is a hybrid artist-filmmaker-writer interested in the malleability of language and behavior - cultural misproduction. Highly edited, architectural encounters de-stabilize capitalist moralisms, or "parables of whiteness," through social theater and a queer sensibility.
Matthew Lax’s (b. Baltimore, Maryland) films and videos have screened and exhibited internationally with venues and film festivals including the Viennale (Austria), IHME Contemporary (Helsinki), MIX New York and MIX Brasil (São Paulo), Los Angeles Municipal Art Gallery (LAMAG), Los Angeles Contemporary Archive (LACA), Everson Museum of Art (Syracuse, NY), REDCAT Los Angeles, Film Forum, San Francisco Cinematheque, Echo Park Film Center, The Drawing Center (New York) and Rencontres Internationales (Paris/Berlin). Curatorial projects include those held at Anthology Film Archives (NY) and Human Resources LA. His writing has appeared in print and online publications including Los Angeles Review of Books (LARB), ArtPractical (San Francisco), Contemporary Art Review Los Angeles (CARLA) and a catalog essay with Lawndale Art Center (Houston). His work is included in Colpa Press' 2019 semi-annual VHS anthology, "Civic TV Vol. 5." He received his BFA from Syracuse University in 2011, and his MFA from California Institute of the Arts (CalArts) in 2016.
